Vlad The Impaler Vers.1.0

I believe that if Vampires truly existed they would not be soap-opera hearthrobs with pearly white fangs. They would be true demons. Obscene, repulsive and vile in every way imaginable.

Some Heads

This is how I keep my Heads and Hands class a little more interesting for me. I painted this face a few days ago, and doodled over it today for fun. Crude stuff, but fun doodling!

Concept

Just started with a figure study and this character came out. So, I decided to try different things and see how many ways I could take the character by changing the face and hair. Fun excercise!

Another late-nighter. This is another quick concept for the story I am developing. Illustration 2 will be kicking my a@% from now on so this might be the last finished piece for a while.

The late night sketch-a- thon continues. Tired of looking at this one, time to move on. This was done completely in PainterX.

Art Nouveau??

Playing around really late last night and came up with this sketch. My humble homage to the style of Gustav Klimt. Oh and that's supposed to be a man's heart in her hands, not a tomato.

Concepts

These are my projects for the last couple of weeks. I've been watching massive amounts of tutorials and trying to learn Painter X backwards so It has been a very busy month and I have only scratched the surface. These pieces were done in Painter X only, no photoshop. Once again just trying to experiment with brush techniques and find my own way within the program using a very limited color palette. I find that I like the expressive and gestural approach to digital painting versus the tight rendered style. On the second piece I did get a little tighter than usual and I was happy with how it came out, though it was exhausting having to stare at the same painting for over fifteen hours.

Hopefully I will be able to put out a few more before fall semester begins!

She came back

This started as a painting of a beautiful girl and evolved into this instead. Still trying to stay loose and gestural, just blocking in shapes and using mostly hard brushes.

Three Head Concepts

Head concepts for a character of mine done in Painter X.

The Tragic Couple

A weekend project. I thought a lesbian version of the tragic couple would be kinda cool. This was done in Painter X. Still trying to experiment with new brushes and effects.

Genie Study

Started doodling someone for the Hunter to hunt. Trying to learn some new brushes in painter and just get back to basic shapes. Bill Sanchez's class is really starting to sink in now that I am on summer vacation. Can't wait to re-paint this one.

The Genie Hunter

A loose color study from reference. I am going to try and loosen up a bit more and try some more painterly, gestural strokes. I will repaint this one soon. I thought it would be cool to design a guy that hunts down genies and kills them.

Baako Noblewoman

A Baako noblewoman's scepter usually contains the burning remains of young voudun initiates. Inhaling these plumes of smoke is rumored to be what gives them their power and their beauty.

Arnaud Profile Study

A friend of mine suggested I show this guy in profile to better explain how the hat looks when worn. Good suggestion. I pencilled and painted this yesterday fairly quickly so not too much detail.

Arnaud of the Proud People and his sparrow Enu.

Creole Mystic

I was supposed to go to class today, but my bathroom flooded. So since I was already home I decided to work on some character designs. This is from my French-African universe. He is a Middle-class Creole mystic and his familiar is the sparrow on his shoulder. I did it in col-erase pencil. Hopefully I can paint it soon.

Tyus the Divine

This is a concept based on Hindu mythology. A Child-King born with the soul of an evil warlord. This painting was inspired by Indra Sharma, the greatest Hindu painter of all time.

Mike

This is a friend from my Heads and Hands one class.

T.H.

My weekend project. A little loose, but I am satisfied. I hope she likes it.

Belamos

This was my spiring break project. I decided to re-deign one of my characters using only a silhouette. I did the original thumbs in brushpen, imported them in, and then worked the whole thing up from black and white. I don't think i am done yet, but I am running out of things to paint on this one.

Asian Jesus.....Woman

Why not?????......... A quick study I did today using painter.

Officer Rudeaux

A design I finished this morning. Sort of a Sci-Fi, French-African Police Woman from the future. I'm in the process of doing a series of character designs based on French and African history, sort of a new France, if you will.

Friday, February 15, 2008

These are some character concepts I've been working on lately. Trying to take more time and learn how to render in a more painterly style. Also really trying to get down faces. My heads and hands class is really gonna help me this semester.

Wednesday, January 23, 2008

This is another character concept for the same children's story as my last post. This is my idea of a wandering African ninja-type warrior woman. I kept it pretty rough this time and just played around.

Steed

A charachter I started a couple of days ago. My first piece all on photoshop, with no pencil drawing to begin with. I am actually truly happy with how it came out. Children's book illustration seems to be pretty fun so far.

The Apple

A study I did tonight from a photo I took in figure drawing last year. Experimenting with some new brushes and blenders.
